Letter, 1912, November 7, San Pablo, California [to] Mr. [Edwin] Markham, [Staten Island] / G. AW. Gallanar. 1912.

Tells Markham that he killed the man and years later turned himself in. He says that he did it in self defense and has gone through many trials. He is finally out on bail; talked to the Governor. Asks Markham to write a letter to the governor to pardon him.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
